The Environmental Learning and Research Centre (ELRC) is a department in the Education faculty at Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa. The ELRC is a leading research hub for all things related to research, education, and innovation in sustainability and environmental education. We take a transdisciplinary approach to addressing pressing social and environmental challenges.  It has been a great joy of ours to create these short and fun micro learning units on agroecology which is a topic we feel passionate about.

Learn the fundamentals of agroecology and sustainable food production. Designed to inspire and equip aspiring farmers, the course provides engaging multimedia content, real-life success stories, and hands-on activities to build practical farming skills.

The River Water Monitoring Course Pathway offers a structured introduction to the principles and practices of water system monitoring through citizen science. Comprising six self-guided Units, the course explores various tools and methodologies employed to assess water quality and ecosystem health.

Greening Your Place is a practical, action-oriented course designed to help you understand, improve, and transform the natural spaces around you. Whether your place is a school, community park, riverbank, garden, or another shared space, this course will guide you through the process of developing a vision, understanding your environment, creating a practical plan, and taking action to bring positive change.

This waste economy learning pathway is designed to provide a general introduction to a vital component of the circular economy, followed by introductory micro-learning units on recycling different types of material. The completion time for each unit is estimated to be two hours, with associated tasks to take your learning into the real world.

YOMA (Youth Marketplace) is an easy to use online platform that provides youth across the globe with opportunities to learn new skills in diverse fields including digital literacy, sustainability and leadership. These short free courses are designed to be accessible and relatable, allowing participants to gain practical skills that enhance their employability and social impact. After completing each course YOMA offers micro credentials and digital certificates which empower young people to build their own CVs and take charge of their future. YOMA aims to create an ecosystem where youth can build competencies, showcase their talents, and access employment or entrepreneurial opportunities that contribute to sustainable development.
